PD Challenge 5 -- Cirque by ladylucrezia PD Challenge 5 -- Cirque by ladylucrezia
Entry #5 for Project Designer, hosted by

This week's challenge was to design a "dark princess" outfit suitable for the Cirque Du Soleil. Not knowing anything about Cirque, I browsed many pictures online of the various costumes used, until I finally got inspired to create my own outfit. The color scheme uses as little true black as possible, because "dark" is so easily associated with black. Why use loads of black when other really dark rich colors work just as well, if not better? So, sticking to the "princess" theme, what better color to base the outfit on than purples? Purple is of course the color associated with royalty. Something that inspired the variants in colors I used was a peacock, as it is a very noble creature, with beautiful jewel tones I could incorporate in my design.

My model has gone through lots and lots of makeup, mostly airbrushing to get the patterns and colors on her skin on all areas not covered by the leotard, which, for modesty's sake while performing, has been lengthened to below the butt like boyshorts. The leotard itself is spandex with airbrushing, sequins, metallic beads, and decals on the breasts and down the midsection. I like the mock black feather edging along the neck and sleeves, which is done in venetian lace. The sleeves are particularly interesting, being fishnet layered over taffeta cuffs, with a sheer black fabric for the sleeves themselves, which are seperate from the outfit. The bottom cuffs (gauntlets) have extra danging beading for added flair. On her back would be 2 identical wings, however in a drawing at this angle, it would be difficult to see them that way, so I just left one. I was inspired to do a wing variation after seeing a few pics from Cirque where the performers had ostrich feather wings, so this idea is not just something out of the blue (no that actually wasn't meant to be a pun, it just came out that way :lmao: ). My model also wears black fishnet stockings over her legs, with teal ballet slippers on her feet, but under the stockings to keep them on her feet at all times. The leotard zips up the back, but has the appearance of a long button-down opening.

This took foreeeeeeeever to color, but I'm definatley pleased with the result. This is way out of my norm, but I think it fits the challenge really well :D

Darn conversion from .psd to .jpg altering some of the colors...merrrrr!

If I hade the body, I would totally wear this. ~giggle~

Since you are airbrushing on the fabric anyway, wouldn't it be easier (and quicker to put on, and less likely to smudge with sweat) if the legs and shoulders at least were fabric, with the face and hands airbrushed to match?

Sorry, but I'm always thinking about how long it takes to get into and out of outfits for masquerades and such ^^;

Not really knowing how well airbrushing stays on actual people...^^; You're probably right, heh.

Have you tried getting into full court garb? Heh, takes me 1-2 hours, but it's worth it :)

How long it would stay on would depend on the paint, but most airbrushes I've delt with use some form of acrylic, which will rub off with friction and was off with sweat. So if she was doing any real gymnastics it might not last.
I think most clowns and theaters use a grease paint, and I don't think that can go through an air brush.

There is probably a way, but I still think it would take a long time to get prepared.

And yes, I have a full set of court garb ^_^ It takes forever to get laced into and primped up, but it makes me look like a queen ::giggle::

The colors - I agree ~ too many people think "dark" = "black" when you can do the same with deep tones of other colors. The makeup is phenominal too, I'd have os much fun painting that on someone...

Good idea for not using too much black. You're right, 'dark' can be so much more. And I love the colors you chose.
My favorite part? The collar. I know that is kind of unusual, but I really like the ruffles and the green at the throat - it makes her seem somewhat like a kind of tropical bird. Or, a peacock like you said. And that is one awesome wing! :D

Thankies much!

Black is great, but it's so overused for "dark" things (not that I mind, but for the sake of this contest, other colors worked better :D ).

I too like the collar :3
